A mentally shattered man, a dehumanized society and a broken relationship - in the end two dead and an orphaned child: This is the material that Georg Büchner left behind in his fragmentary »Woyzeck« in 1837. In 2000, the internationally renowned singer and composer Tom Waits, the songwriter Kathleen Brennan and the theater artist Robert Wilson created a gripping piece of music theater from Büchner's scenes, cynical and yet full of a longing for happiness. For the individual scenes, Waits and Brennan wrote touching and disturbing songs between ballads, chansons and moritat, which sometimes take on the character of a slow love duet, sometimes that of a merciless hunt. Manfred Weiß brings this piece to the stage of Semper Zwei for the first time.
