Robert Devereux Robert Devereuxis based on the historical, checkered relationship between the aging English Queen Elizabeth I and her aristocratic protégé Roberto Devereux. Accused of treason by political opponents, Roberto Devereux is only saved from the scaffold by his relationship with the queen. However, when Elisabeth finds out that Roberto loves another woman, she is ready to seal his death. She regrets her decision too late. In the big final scene, which, along with the madness aria of Lucia di Lammermoor, is one of Donizetti's most ingenious inspirations, filled with a longing for death, she announces her renunciation of the throne. In his third Tudor opera, Donizetti was more interested in the constellation of the characters, their emotions and passions, which he was able to draw with great drama and moving urgency. Once again we can look forward to the multifaceted portrait of Elisabeth by Edita Gruberova in this revival; at her side Pavol Breslik presents himself in the title role.
