About this event
This is the New York City premiere of a new English version of Kurt Weill, Bertolt Brecht, and Elisabeth Hauptmann's 1929 musical satire. The production is presented through a collaboration involving Opera Saratoga, The Glimmerglass Festival, Finger Lakes Opera, and The Seagle Festival. Kelley Rourke provides the English adaptation and dramaturgy. The production is set in a smoky speakeasy where religion and capitalism collide and retains the songs "Bilbao Song," "Mandalay Song," and "Surabaya Johnny." Robert Ainsley is music director, Mary Birnbaum is director, and Ana Karneža is a featured artist. Instrumentalists from the Manhattan School of Music Jazz Program participate in the production.
