Nicolò Isouard's Cendrillon was a huge success for several decades, being performed widely throughout Europe. In fact, Rossini's La Cenerentola (1817) is essentially an Italian adaptation of this French opéra-comique, which circulated in numerous translations and was frequently imitated. Here, fairytale fantasy gives way to an overtly comic spirit, with surface humor that reveals timely irony about a world where flashy appearances often outshine modest virtue. This 2026 presentation is semi-staged and centers on the improbable love between two people with nothing in common. Featuring a Franco-Québécois cast and presented in collaboration with Palazzetto Bru Zane (publisher of the new critical edition), the production forms part of the Palazzetto Bru Zane Montreal “Cycle Paris in the age of Beethoven.”
