For this concert, the Orchestre national Montpellier Occitanie reunites with its music director Roderick Cox, known for his precise and generous baton. Alongside him is South Korean pianist Sunwook Kim, who burst onto the scene by winning the Leeds Competition at 18 and is now a major soloist, combining power with clarity. Together they explore two contrasting faces of Johannes Brahms. First comes the youthful Piano Concerto No. 1 (1858): stormy and symphonic, almost a dramatic poem in which the piano struggles with the orchestra—a score born of despair and dedicated to Robert Schumann. Then, twenty years later, the mature Symphony No. 2: all light and pastoral warmth, touched by a melancholic smile. The drama subsides and gives way to grace. From tempest to serenity: one genius, two faces.
