Ted Huffman’s stark, stripped-back staging of Philip Venables’s 4.48 Psychosis makes its debut on the Linbury Theatre stage in a revival marking the opera’s tenth anniversary. First premiered in 2016 at the Lyric Hammersmith (with an off-site revival in 2018), the work returns with Huffman once again directing. The opera explores “opera as music and text,” blending sung music with spoken word, voiceover, projected text and percussion-driven dialogues alongside conventional vocal writing. Sarah Kane’s original play text is used without alteration, distributed among a vocal ensemble and six-piece instrumental group. Part of the Linbury Theatre season curated by Associate Director Netia Jones, the 2026 run features conductor Naomi Woo leading the performances.
