"At 4:48 am, when clarity comes for an hour and twelve minutes, I'm in my right mind." Philip Venables' award-winning chamber opera from 2016, based on the play of the same name by the English playwright Sarah Kane (1971 - 1999), leads into 24 situational tableaus deep into the psyche of a person shaped by emotional states, fears and illness. His constant struggle for normality, love, life and acceptance is deeply touching, blurs the line between illness and health and keeps asking the question: how does life work in harmony with oneself? From the musical perspective of six singers and twelve orchestra musicians, the state of the unspeakable expands into tangible space in highly poetic and at the same time unsparing texts.
