This production of La Clemenza di Tito features a stylised staging by director Willy Decker. The thematic core of the opera—clemency and forgiveness—is evoked through a minimalist, symbolic set. At the centre stands a large marble block that gradually reveals the hidden, vulnerable face of the emperor as a solitary, wounded man. The staging strips away the outdated conventions of opera seria to foreground Mozart’s subtle, delicate musical drama and the emotional truth of the characters. Set and costumes by John Macfarlane and lighting by Hans Toelstede create a cohesive visual language that supports Decker’s psychological focus.
