This world premiere production of Matthew Aucoin’s 'Eurydice' reimagines the classic Orpheus myth from the heroine's perspective. Developed as a co-commission with the Metropolitan Opera, the staging features a libretto by Sarah Ruhl, adapted from her own acclaimed play. The production is noted for its lush, contemporary musical language and a visual landscape that transitions between the world of the living and a surreal, subterranean Underworld. Directed by Mary Zimmerman, the staging emphasizes the emotional weight of memory and loss. The Underworld is depicted not as a place of fire, but as a site of bureaucratic strangeness and fading recollections, where the 'Stones' act as a Greek chorus providing both dark humor and narrative friction. The production design utilizes bold colors and inventive set pieces to distinguish the vibrant upper world from the muted, rainy atmosphere of the land of the dead.
