Dael Orlandersmith's Forever is a one-woman show commissioned and developed by Center Theatre Group as part of its DouglasPlus experimental lineup. Directed by Neel Keller, the production embraces a minimalist, highly focused staging. The set by Takeshi Kata features a raised, bare wooden platform with a podium, a chair, and a small table holding an old-fashioned record player, a candle, and personal objects. A distinctive strip of wooden planking circles the theater’s outer wall as a gallery lined with faded, curled photographs of Orlandersmith’s family and artistic influences. Subtle, concentrated lighting by Mary Louise Geiger enhances an intimate, campfire-style storytelling atmosphere, while Adam Phalen’s sound design offers precise, unobtrusive cues. Orlandersmith performs the 90-minute piece in a long black dress and work boots, frequently referencing a leather-bound notebook at the podium.
