BANTÚ

About

BANTÚ is a musical-theatre production centered on African and Afro-Uruguayan heritage. Its central image is a chorus of Bantu ancestors gathered beneath a baobab, with the sacred drum linking the past, present, and future. The protagonist is Alex, a young Afro-Uruguayan woman whose family identity and relationship to African cultural heritage form the dramatic focus of the work. The production combines acting, singing, choreography, live instrumental music, and African dance. Choreographic direction is by Efuka Lontange, musical direction by Bob Telson, and stage direction by Graciela Corso. Rosanna Albarenque designed the costumes and set, Valentín Ferreira designed the sound, and Lu Godoy designed the lighting. The musical runs for 80 minutes and was followed by a 40-minute discussion.
