Neil Patel’s scenic design features a modular wooden ceiling and descending column forms marked with crosses, lit in searing reds for Elizabeth’s court and cooler blues for Mary’s world. The staging underlines psychological and political confinement: Mary’s precarious bare-metal stair contrasts with Elizabeth’s refined, portable stairs used for proclamations. The chorus becomes a powerful visual force, moving across an open stage to amplify tension and momentum throughout the action.
