Overdrive closed Esprit Orchestra’s 2016–2017 season with a program that probes the meeting point of human feeling and mechanical force. The concert curated a lineage from early 20th‑century “machine music” by Honegger and Mosolov to late‑20th and 21st‑century works by Adams, Harman, and Adès, each harnessing propulsive energy through distinct harmonic languages. A highlight was the Canadian premiere of Thomas Adès’s Violin Concerto: Concentric Paths, with Véronique Mathieu as soloist and Alex Pauk conducting. A pre‑concert chat contextualized the pieces for audiences. The evening was supported by The Judy & Wilmot Matthews Foundation and included outreach that welcomed approximately 40 Syrian newcomers to Koerner Hall.
