Parallel Colour

Parallel Colour was presented by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group as a contemporary music concert. BCMG described the program as symmetrical: it moves toward premieres by Edmund Finnis and Rozalie Hirs, with works for solo percussion and solo clarinet placed on either side and pieces for singer and ensemble framing the program. The event-specific program source confirms the six-work sequence: Vivier, Davies, Finnis, Hirs, Harvey, and Donatoni. The central Finnis work uses an ensemble of fifteen musicians divided into two symmetrical groups, with a double bass in the centre. The spatial arrangement informs the musical design, with clear patterns moving across the ensemble space and near-replica harmonies and melodic shapes voiced alongside one another. Richard Baker conducted Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, with featured artists Rebecca Bottone (soprano), Julian Warburton (percussion) and Timothy Lines (clarinet).
