John Adam’s Second Quartet, first performed in January 2015 was specially written for the St. Lawrence String Quartet with whom the composer has collaborated for many years.The music develops out of small Beethovenian fragments - the Opus 110 and 111 Piano Sonatas, one of the variations from the Diabelli, which are then carried off to unknown territories.
