The Flight of the Hummingbird is a new family opera co-commissioned and co-produced by Pacific Opera Victoria and Vancouver Opera. Based on an Indigenous parable known in Haida culture, the work traces its origins to the Quechuan people of South America. The visual world draws from Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas’s celebrated graphic novel, infusing the stage with his dynamic Haida-manga aesthetic. Conceived for a school tour, the production couples spirited music with an empowering environmental message. Its 45-minute English-language score by Maxime Goulet supports a story that encourages courage, agency, and community action. The result is an accessible, visually distinctive opera that resonates with children and adults alike.
