Prosper Mérimée wrote Carmen in 1845. If we compare his novel with the libretto that Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy were to draw from it in 1875 for the eponymous opera by Georges Bizet, the substance of the story remains the same. However, at Mérimée's, Carmen is married to Garcia, one of the bandits of the Dancaïre smugglers' troop. Don José kills Garcia, the Dancaïre dies in an ambush and Carmen has a relationship, not with the bullfighter Escamillo, but with a picador named Lucas...
