This production of The Legend of the White Snake marks the return of the China National Peking Opera Company (CNPOC) to Macao. The piece is a beloved masterpiece penned by celebrated playwright Tian Han and was originally directed by the legendary opera director Li Zigui. Meticulously refined over the course of more than 60 years, the work has established itself as a fundamental part of the operatic repertoire for countless generations of dan (female) role performers. The production is led by principal artists Yu Kuizhi and Li Shengsu. Li Shengsu, an outstanding representative of the Mei Lanfang school, mentors Chu Fengyi, with whom she shares the lead role of Bai Suzhen. Together, they portray the character’s steadfast, forbidden love for her mortal companion, transporting the audience into a mesmerizing dreamscape that balances civil and martial elements.
