Conceived by cellist Francesco Dillon, the Mantra concert takes as its starting point Jonathan Harvey's Advaya (1994), a masterpiece in the repertoire for cello and live electronics composed at IRCAM. In the form of Buddhism that influenced the English composer, "Advaya" means "not two": here, the cello mirrors the sounds of the sampler and the texture of electronic sounds. Riccardo Nova, who studied Indian music, explores microtonality in his new work āroha, while the unity and circular ecstasy belong equally to the monochrome style of Justė Janulytė's Encens, a piece written in memory of Jonathan Harvey on commission from Francesco Dillon. The three works together form a meditative program in which acoustic, electronic, and aesthetic sources intertwine.
