The 2003 Boston Early Music Festival (BEMF), themed “Germany: A Melting Pot of French, Italian, Eastern European and Regional Influences,” presented Johann Georg Conradi’s Ariadne as its centerpiece opera. This fully staged revival at Boston’s Cutler Majestic Theatre marked the first complete performance of the work in roughly 250–312 years. The festival created a collaborative environment of local, national, and international artists, and incorporated dance workshops in Baroque gesture alongside the opera’s staging. Across the Festival week (June 9–15, 2003), six fully staged performances of Ariadne were mounted, highlighting BEMF’s mission to rediscover and present rare Baroque repertoire with historical insight.
