Leaning Tree

Leaning Tree is a contemporary dance piece by Fernando Melo. At its core lies the image of leaning—between steadiness and loss of control, between support and motion—as a physical response to pressure, change, and fragility. The production draws on Vilhelm Hammershøi’s painterly language: composition, light and shadow, and the concealment of inner states shape the stage. Boundaries between set elements and dancers blur, creating a mysterious atmosphere. The set is devised by Fernando Melo with Raphael Frisenvænge Solholm, and costumes are by Maria Ipsen. Premiered in 2023 at Danish Dance Theatre in cooperation with Copenhagen Phil, the original score is by Danish composer Signe Lykke. The Braunschweig run at the Kleines Haus is part of the dance-theatre program and is recommended for ages 16+.
