To highlight the immediate beauty of the music of Bernstein and Britten, Wayne Marshall—one of the foremost interpreters of 20th‑century American and British repertoire—takes the podium. The program opens with Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, a selection of Psalms in Hebrew that combines austere melodic simplicity with surprising timbral effects; continues with Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes, capable of evoking the cry of seagulls and the sea’s phosphorescence; and closes with the Suite from the ballet Fancy Free by the American composer, brimming with the exuberance of young sailors on shore leave in New York.
