Basso Ostinato is an Italian choreographer Caterina Sagna’s dance-theatre work built on the musical idea of a returning bass line. Onstage, this becomes a relentless recurrence of a social situation that erodes and mutates. Three men sit at a table, drink, smoke, and talk while images of Giselle flicker on a television. Everyday gestures swell into choreographed movement as language unravels under alcohol and repetition. The tone is darkly comic, often described as a cruel farce. With only a table and three chairs, the austere set exposes a bodily mechanism in which the performers seem to mourn themselves. Irony coexists with an undercurrent of aggression. The ostinato structure tightens the loop, culminating in a symbolically funereal turn.
