Schick Machine is a collaboratively created multi‑disciplinary music theater work designed for percussionist Steven Schick. It unfolds in a visually compelling world of mechanical devices and invented instruments, created by composer and instrument builder Paul Dresher with writer/director Rinde Eckert, lighting and visual designer Tom Ontiveros, instrument inventor Daniel Schmidt, and mechanical sound artist Matt Heckert. The staging transforms the space into a magical environment of enormous, specially conceived instruments—such as the Hurdy Grande, the Tumbler, the Peacock, the Field of Flowers, and a deconstructed pipe organ—that serve as both sculptural set pieces and primary sound sources. A signature element is the breakdown of the barrier between performer and audience: at the end, audience members are invited onstage to interact with and play the fantastical instruments.
