Time to Gather

“time to gather” was a durational piano event that dismantled traditional barriers between artist and audience. Opening MaerzMusik 2016, the performance rejected a fixed program and conventional seating in favor of a fluid, participatory environment. Audience members shared the stage with pianist Marino Formenti, choosing where to sit or lie down, moving freely, conversing with the artist, and even suggesting what to play next. The setlist was drawn on the spot from a vast repertoire spanning the Middle Ages to today. The atmosphere was salon-like, with sofas, mats, and informal seating encouraging social interaction, listening at various distances, and relaxed engagement. The evening lasted about four hours and had no predetermined conclusion, foregrounding the act of gathering over passive listening.
