Francesca Zambello’s staging of Hans-Jürgen von Bose’s The Sorrows of Young Werther (US premiere) embraced the opera’s deliberately fragmented, dreamlike form. Rather than unfolding as a continuous narrative, scenes appeared as abrupt, psychologically charged episodes drawn from Goethe’s novel. The Santa Fe Opera’s open-air setting became part of the drama: natural skies and weather echoed the work’s turbulent emotions. Bruno Schwengl’s minimalist design—dominated by a pale blue semicircular wall—framed a revolving inner stage that revealed shifting tableaux such as Lotte’s family room, a snowy lane, an ivy-covered wall, and a traveling coach, like animated dioramas that emphasized Werther’s estranged gaze. Craig Miller’s incisive lighting sculpted the space and intensified the second act’s mounting sense of doom. The production’s tone stripped away sentimentalism in favor of a starker, modern portrait of obsession and despair.
