The Passenger was developed as part of DANCE ON, a Germany-wide initiative dedicated to creating new stage works for dancers over the age of 40. The Bayerisches Staatsballett embraced this vision, taking inspiration from Jiří Kylián’s groundbreaking NDT 3, which foregrounded the artistry of mature performers. Longtime Munich guest choreographer Simone Sandroni—who became ballet director in Bielefeld for the 2015/2016 season—created the piece specifically for the Bavarian State Ballet and its director Ivan Liška. Built on intergenerational collaboration, the production places the youngest dancers alongside seasoned artists from the main company. It celebrates bodies that carry decades of artistic memory and training, echoing associate artistic director Bettina Wagner-Bergelt’s observation that years of work with great artists are “stored and recorded” in the dancers’ bodies. Across its concise 25 minutes, the work honors legacy, experience, and the living archive of dance.
