This concert at the Sacrum Profanum festival is devoted to the uncompromising, imaginative work of Kraków-born composer Zbigniew Karkowski. A key figure in experimental music, Karkowski combined sound art, improvisation, and stochastic procedures associated with Iannis Xenakis. Previous Sacrum Profanum editions presented his high-intensity pieces with ensembles like Zeitkratzer and Sweden’s chamber noise orchestra GGR Betong. For this 2019 program, the focus shifts to works created with cellist Anton Lukoszevieze, the vocal ensemble Zespół Wokalny Gęba, and electronic artist Wolfram. The venue, Cricoteka—an architecturally striking former power plant wrapped in a contemporary structure—mirrors the avant-garde spirit of the program.
