The Immigrant

The 1993 staging of The Immigrant at North Coast Repertory Theatre marked the play’s San Diego premiere, presented during the company’s 11th season in its original 194-seat, six-rows-deep venue. Guided by founder and Artistic Director Olive Blakistone, the theatre selected the work for its power to illuminate shared human experiences across cultures and to engage audiences in meaningful conversation. The intimate space enhanced the immediacy of the storytelling, placing audiences close to the action. In 2010, North Coast Rep revisited the work with a one-night staged reading as part of the 17th Annual Lipinsky Family San Diego Jewish Arts Festival. That special event featured playwright Mark Harelik performing and sharing reflections on his family’s history, followed by a post-show discussion. Together, these presentations reflect the theatre’s ongoing commitment to personal, community-centered narratives and educational engagement.
