Broken Chord

Broken Chord is a powerfully expressive production that moves fluidly between concert, dance, and performance art. Choreographed by Gregory Maqoma with musical direction by Thuthuka Sibisi, the work rises above simple cultural binaries to open a new dialogue. It brings together vocal and gestural vocabularies shaped by contemporary artists and citizens who also embody a Western gaze. The staging draws on Maqoma’s South African roots and his experience in European contemporary dance. A central feature is the integration of Ensemble Aedes with four South African vocalists/dancers, weaving sound and movement into a collective memory. The result is a work that bridges history and the present, reframing colonial-era narratives through live choral textures and kinetic storytelling.
