MaerzMusik 2020 opens with an extraordinary musical encounter: Bolivia’s Orquesta Experimental de Instrumentos Nativos (OEIN) and Berlin’s vocal collective PHØNIX16 collaborate on a project that connects the pre-Columbian musical culture of the Aymara with experimental vocal practice. The artistic journey revolves around the multilayered concept of “environment” in social, natural, political, philosophical, acoustic, and artistic terms. Founded in 1980, OEIN is rooted in pre-Columbian traditions while embracing experimental music. Together with PHØNIX16, more than 30 musicians and singers embark on a research and experimental process seeking a shared artistic basis through mutual transformation, acknowledging cultural differences and the complex legacy of colonialism. Strobe effects are used as part of the performance.
