Medusa's Children is a chamber opera film created by the Toronto-based collective OperaQ, with music by Colin McMahon and a libretto by Charlie Petch. The work reframes the Medusa myth through a contemporary trans and queer lens, centering on the family left behind after Medusa’s death. Developed specifically as cinema rather than a stage capture, the film uses location shooting and intimate storytelling to explore themes of sexual violence, toxic masculinity, misgendering, and complex family dynamics. Director Lauren Halasz emphasizes present-day emotional realities within a mythic frame, while Stephen Bell’s cinematography supports a vivid, character-driven approach. The score provides a colorful, detailed palette tailored to on-camera performance. Pacific Opera Victoria presented the film as a one-night community screening at the Baumann Centre on June 2, 2022, inviting audiences to experience OperaQ’s digital production together as a watch party.
