The staging for The News divides the performance space into three distinct sections: the central newsroom of The Mirror (a fictional metropolitan tabloid), the teenage Girl's bedroom on one side, and the Killer's one-room apartment on the other. The set design by Jane Musky was characterized by critics as a littered, gloomy jumble containing microphones and punk-styled band members, with the newsroom inexplicably resembling a sushi bar. Director David Rotenberg incorporated multimedia elements into the staging, broadcasting the action in video close-up on four television monitors that flanked the stage. The production utilized a Brechtian approach where none of the characters are given specific names, instead being referred to by generic titles such as Executive Editor, Girl, and Killer. The choreography by Wesley Fata included unconventional elements, such as having the newspaper editor bump and grind while shouting for rewrites.
