Matthew López’s The Inheritance is a sweeping, two-part epic about three generations of gay men reckoning with their past and future in New York. Drawing inspiration from E.M. Forster’s Howards End, the play places Forster (as “Morgan”) onstage as a guide while interweaving stories of love, loss, class, and community. Spanning more than six hours across two parts, Stephen Daldry’s production combines Bob Crowley’s minimalist, sculptural design with Jon Clark’s evocative lighting and sound by Christopher Reid and Paul Arditti. The piece looks back to the AIDS crisis while considering how wisdom and responsibility pass between generations. Transferring to Broadway after its acclaimed London run, it offers a vivid, modern portrait of survival, healing, and the meaning of home.
