Chez Joey is a bold, contemporary reimagining of the 1940 Rodgers and Hart musical Pal Joey. Co-directed by Tony Goldwyn and Savion Glover, with a newly revised book by Richard Lagravenese, the production relocates the narrative to the Black jazz scene of 1940s Chicago. This reframing explores race, class, ambition, and belonging in mid-20th-century America. Leaning into authentic jazz idioms and tap rhythms, the staging begins with a six-piece ensemble at Lucille’s nightclub, grounding the show’s world in sound. Savion Glover’s choreography and “orchestrology” drive the production’s pulse, turning movement and rhythm into essential storytelling tools. Classic Rodgers and Hart standards are integrated with a jazz-forward sensibility that fits the club setting. The result is a revisal that feels immediate and alive while honoring the original score.
