Shadow Cities

Shadow Cities is a collaborative creation by Ephrat Asherie Dance and GRAMMY-winning pianist/composer Arturo O’Farrill. Rooted in Afro-diasporic vernacular dance—house, breaking, hip hop, waacking—and live Latin jazz, the piece reflects on the beauty, vastness, and joy of the in-between shaped by club culture. A cast of seven dancers and four musicians weaves movement and music into a shared conversation, exploring identity, memory, and connection. Co-commissioned by La Jolla Music Society and the ProtoStar Foundation, the work places O’Farrill’s compositional voice in dialogue with EAD’s idiosyncratic movement language.
