For its fortieth anniversary, the Ensemble intercontemporain commissioned seven new works from seven composers, each inspired by one of the seven days of the biblical Genesis. Conceived by music director Matthias Pintscher, the project—titled EIC 40 – Genesis—celebrates the Ensemble’s foundational commitment to creation. The composers, spanning different generations and aesthetics, explore diverse ideas of creation, from sui generis invention to renewal and transformation of existing material. Each score was conceived to be around ten minutes, tailored to the Ensemble’s forces, and anchored by the pitch E-flat as a shared axis. Together, the pieces form a continuous arc, illuminating multiple perspectives on beginnings and artistic genesis.
