The Return of Ernest Bloch is a theatrical monodrama conceived and written by Israeli pianist and Bloch scholar Zecharia Plavin. The production strips away the full orchestra to focus on an intimate, chamber-style presentation featuring a dramatic narrator, a solo violinist, and a pianist. Presented as the culminating third night of TICO’s 15th season tribute to Ernest Bloch, the production was designed to explore the life of the Swiss-American composer who famously integrated Jewish spirit and traditions into the orchestral world. While the original text of the monodrama was written in Hebrew, this San Diego presentation was performed in English to accommodate the local audience. The staging was minimal, using the Cohen Social Hall at Tifereth Israel Synagogue to foster a close connection between the narrator, the musicians, and the audience.
