The Daddy Machine is a family-friendly musical commissioned by Diversionary Theatre, marking a world premiere that celebrates both the unique and universal aspects of LGBT families. Developed in consultation with the LGBT parenting group Family Matters, the expanded story aims to authentically reflect the lives of its intended audience without implying that children with same-sex parents are missing something essential. The staging features a vibrant, kid-appealing scenic design by Christian Lopez in bright oranges, greens, and purples with polka dots, including a playful wall that cleverly conceals the accompanist’s piano. Audience participation helps depict the 62 dads that burst from the machine, while costumer Shelly Williams provides silly dress-up outfits and accessories—like fake mustaches—to heighten the fun. Co-directed by Siobhan Sullivan and Rayme Sciaroni, the hour-long show balances slapstick humor for kids with knowing references for adults.
