Disappearing Act was the world premiere of an original musical by 27-year-old Boston-based director, choreographer, composer, and playwright Michael Oster. Produced by Diversionary Theatre, whose mission was to present works by and for the gay and lesbian community, the production was staged at the West Coast Production Company in San Diego. The staging was minimalist, using a small, bare stage accompanied solely by a piano played by music director Steven Schwarz. Despite the minimal set, the show featured inventive costumes by John-Bryan Davis, notably in the number Shakedown in the Breakdown Lane, where the cast embodied both drivers and cars, with racing gloves and flashlights as headlights.
