Diversionary Theatre's West Coast Premiere of Midnight at the Never Get is an intimate, 90-minute cabaret-style musical set in 1965 Greenwich Village. Directed by Stephen Brotebeck, the show features a lush, seductive score inspired by the Great American Songbook and transforms the theatre into “The Never Get,” an illegal backroom cabaret club. The design team crafts a moody, immersive world: Yi-Chien Lee’s blue velvet club set and lit bar sign, Nayeli Bailey’s evocative lighting with dimming and silhouette effects, and Claire Peterson’s crisp tuxedo and leather looks define the era and characters. Janine Rose’s sound design shapes shifting realities, contrasting the intimacy of a hand-held mic with the clarity of a lavalier. A live four-piece band is integrated onstage, deepening the 1960s secret-club atmosphere and fully merging music with storytelling.
