Commissioned by the La Jolla Playhouse, this world premiere production of Lee Blessing's play was directed by Des McAnuff. The staging utilized an efficient, double-duty set designed by Neil Patel that simultaneously represented a motel room and a maximum-security prison. The production's atmosphere was heavily supported by its auditory and visual design. Composer Michael Roth and sound designer John Kilgore collaborated to create an appropriately chilling sound score that underscored the dark thematic material. The visual aesthetic was completed by Peter Maradudin's lighting design and Susan Hilferty's costumes. Following its premiere at La Jolla, the play was subsequently produced by the Humana Festival at the Actors Theatre of Louisville in March 1991.
