Director Darko Tresnjak relocates Shakespeare’s Roman tragedy to a stark totalitarian world of the late 1930s–1940s, drawing on the visual and political vocabulary of pre–World War II Europe. The staging deploys towering red banners, air-raid sirens, jackbooted officers, and pitchfork-wielding crowds to evoke a society on the brink. Tresnjak trims and reshapes the 1610 text to keep the action propulsive, culminating in a freeze-frame finale that nods to the horror of Munch’s The Scream. A striking choice has Coriolanus’s preteen son portrayed as a life-size, faceless puppet—an unsettling emblem of a future yet unwritten. The tribunes, outfitted in newsboy caps and armed with newspapers, channel the spin, calculation, and media-savvy politics of the modern age.
