The world-premiere staging of Escape to Margaritaville at the La Jolla Playhouse brings an island paradise to life, where the sun is hot, the ocean warm, and the drinks plentiful. Directed by Artistic Director Christopher Ashley and choreographed by Kelly Devine, the production blends a relaxed tropical vibe with high-energy musical-theatre staging. The creative team evokes both Caribbean and Ohio settings through scenic design by Walt Spangler, costumes by Paul Tazewell, lighting by Howell Binkley, and sound by Brian Ronan, with wigs, hair, and makeup by Leah J. Loukas and aerial effects by Flying by Foy. Musically, the show weaves Jimmy Buffett classics like Cheeseburger in Paradise, Volcano, and Margaritaville with original compositions, crafted by Music Supervisor/Arranger Christopher Jahnke, Orchestrator Michael Utley, and Music Consultant Mac McAnally. Supported by an Edgerton Foundation New Play Award, the La Jolla Playhouse premiere introduced Buffett’s catalog in a new narrative framework.
