San Diego Junior Theatre presents the San Diego premiere of Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, created by an all-AAPI creative team led by Director Sarah Jane Salonga, Music Director Stephen Evangelista, and Choreographer Theresa Maigue Bendorf. Cultural Consultant June Zhou worked closely with the young company to share Chinese folklore, symbolism, and traditions, grounding the staging in cultural authenticity. The musical’s storytelling is supported by a live soundscape that prominently features the erhu, a traditional Chinese bowed string instrument. Design elements across costumes, props, sets, and lighting were developed to honor Chinese culture while enhancing the show’s spirited theatricality. The family-friendly production runs approximately 90 minutes (including a 15-minute intermission) and includes community engagement events such as a composer talkback with Min Kahng, a Pajama Night, and a traditional lion dance by White Dragon Martial Arts. An ASL-interpreted performance is offered on March 14.
