In Vivaldiana, choreographer Mauro Astolfi translates several of Antonio Vivaldi’s creations into movement to illuminate the composer’s talent and his singular ability to reinvent Baroque music. The production portrays Vivaldi as a musician who, although immersed in a rigorously rational era, stood apart through his clear awareness of the limits of his time and his willingness to move against the current. Astolfi reworks Vivaldi’s musical architecture to restore the distinctive qualities of his art, using it as a source of inspiration for a choreographic research project that blends formal clarity with the more histrionic and sometimes eccentric human traits of the “Red Priest.” Vivaldiana highlights Vivaldi’s historic role as one of the first composers to write with the explicit intention of stimulating public taste rather than merely accommodating it.
