The public world premiere of Max Richter’s SLEEP transformed Berlin’s Kraftwerk into an overnight sleeping hall for three consecutive nights in March 2016. Conceived as an eight-hour lullaby for a frenetic world, the work invites audiences to listen while resting, moving through phases of sleep and wakefulness. Scored for piano, strings, electronics, and soprano, the performance unfolded continuously from 23:00 to 09:00 with strict quiet and no-recording policies. The industrial architecture of Kraftwerk became part of the soundscape, while sleeping spaces were arranged on Level 8. Developed with neuroscientist David Eagleman, SLEEP explores how music can accompany and shape the night’s passage.
