Indigo is the first operetta by Johann Strauss Jr. Its performance at the State Opera is part of the European Stage Works Festival (EJSF), which takes place in cooperation with the Vienna Institute for Strauss Research (Wiener Institut für Strauss-Forschung). For the first time in its history, the festival presents all 17 stage works by Johann Strauss. The story of the operetta is full of comic situations against the background of bad economic conditions in King Indigo's country. He is an incompetent ruler who survives only on the taxes of the population. In parallel, the love story of Jania, apparently Indig's adviser, and Fantaska, a young Viennese woman trapped in Indig harem, takes place here. Alibaba, a mulcher who would like to enjoy the king's harem, gets involved, but he doesn't succeed because his wife Tofana is still on his heels.
