Director Neel Keller frames this La Jolla Playhouse production of Molière’s comedy as a playful, self-aware theatrical event. A strolling accordionist welcomes the audience on an Astroturf-green stage, evoking a French café atmosphere. Mark Wendland’s design features a fleur-de-lis half-curtain and a dollhouse-scaled room for Agnes, nodding to Christian Bérard’s 1936 designs. The staging constantly breaks the fourth wall with witty act announcements—a skateboarded placard, a stamped armchair, and a tricolor flag. Keller blends brisk farce with flashes of near-tragic intensity, punctuated by sight gags like a hyper-rotating double door and a giant book of marriage maxims. The servants even deliver a French-language take on “You Really Got Me,” folding pop culture into the classic. Lighting by James F. Ingalls and costumes by Allison Reeds complete the sharp, tongue-in-cheek French aesthetic.
