North Coast Repertory Theatre presented the San Diego premiere of Mark Brown’s fast-paced, highly theatrical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic. Directed by Allison Bibicoff, the staging embraced an inventive, minimalist approach often compared to The 39 Steps, relying on wit, rapid transformations, and physical comedy. Five actors portrayed 42 characters, with Richard Baird anchoring the narrative as Phileas Fogg and the remaining ensemble covering a whirlwind of roles. The production favored clever, low-tech stagecraft to conjure trains, boats, and even an elephant without heavy realism. Design collaborators included Marty Burnett (scenery), Matthew Novotny (lighting), Dave Mickey (sound), Kim DeShazo (costumes), and Holly Gillard (props). The result was a buoyant, vaudevillian adventure driven by timing, versatility, and imagination.
